Union Avenue Opera’s new Fall One-Act Festival presents dwb (driving while black) and As One, two contemporary works that tackle themes of identity, personal struggle, and societal challenges. In dwb, by Susan Kander and Roberta Gumbel, a Black mother recounts her fears and experiences as her son navigates the perilous reality of driving while Black in America. As One, by Laura Kaminsky, Mark Campbell, and Kimberly Reed, follows the journey of a transgender individual named Hannah as she embraces self-discovery and seeks acceptance in a world of misunderstanding. Together, these poignant operas create a thought-provoking evening that sheds light on deeply personal and universally resonant issues.

Each performance will be followed by a talk-back session with the artists and special guests, offering audiences an opportunity to reflect on the work and its relevance to contemporary life.
