L'un des plus célèbres musiciens de l’Inde, le maestro du tabla Pandit Sharda Sahai, est décédé le 20 novembre 2011, à l'âge de 76 ans, entouré de sa famille à l’hôpital Ealing à Londres. Panditji est reconnu comme l'un des plus grands interprètes du style de Bénarès, et a permis son développement dans le monde entier, notamment au Canada, en Amérique et au Royaume-Uni. Provenant d’une famille de cinq générations de maîtres musiciens, et fidèle à la tradition de ses ancêtres, il était également un musicien de son temps.

Par sa grande sagesse, son savoir et son humour, Pandit Sharda Sahai a profondément touché tous ceux qui sont entrés en contact avec lui. On se souviendra de lui pour ses performances solos envoûtantes, ses collaborations avec l’Occident ainsi que ses compétences et sa générosité en tant que professeur. Son héritage restera vivant à travers ses disciples et ses étudiants ainsi qu’à travers le Pandit Ram Sahai Sangeet Vidyalaya, école qu'il a fondé à Bénarès en 1965, afin que ceux qui sont en dehors de la tradition puissent avoir accès à l'éducation de la musique indienne et des arts de la scène.

One of India’s most renowned tabla maestros, Pandit Sharda Sahai passed away on 20th November 2011, at the age of 76 surrounded by his family in Ealing Hospital, London. Panditji was renowned as one of the greatest exponents of the Benares Baj and pioneered its development worldwide, most notably in Canada, America and the UK. Panditji hailed from five generations of master musicians and whilst he was faithful to the tradition of his ancestors he also was very much a musician of his time.

He profoundly touched all those who came into contact with him with his great wisdom, knowledge and humour. He will be remembered for his spellbinding solo performances, East-West collaborations, and skill and generosity as a teacher. His legacy will live on through his disciples and students and in the Pandit Ram Sahai Sangeet Vidyalaya which he founded in Benares in 1965 so that those outside of the tradition could have access to education in Indian Music and the Performing Arts.
